9 different places to learn a language at your next tandem-partner meeting

Learn a language the easy way with a tandem-partner!

For many of you, this might be the first time you learn a language with a tandem-partner ever. So how and where should you meet? As Allan from Swap Language has had many tandem-meetings before, he has experience with it; furthermore, we have researched studies of how teams become good teams in the long run. So here are some approaches and ideas you can use as guidelines!

For first meetings

We already explicitly pointed out that it is very important to meet somewhere in public for your first tandem-partner meeting. Mostly for your own safety, but also because the surroundings are more relaxed when there are other things going on around you.

Here are some ideas for meeting places:

Places in public:

A local café

Arrange a meeting with your tandem-partner in a local café. Think of it as a break from your daily routines and enjoy a cup of coffee while getting to know the other person.

Talk about the surroundings, how people look, the weather, personal stuff, share stories of the time when you ate 7 hotdogs in 5 minutes, not because you were in a competition, simply because you love freaking hotdogs!

Go to a bar in the centre

Get out of your daily routines and get a drink with your tandem-partner at a bar somewhere. Enjoy a tandem-meeting in the night life. You decide yourself how this type of meeting should proceed. At least, we at Swap Language know how a drink can make you speak Russian even though you have never spoken it before 😉 .

Exercises to learn a language for this particular location:
Talk about the surroundings, how people look, the weather, personal stuff, about the time you catched a squirrel with your bare hands.

Shopping

Go shopping together. Or whatever you need to buy. This is an activity that opens up many different exercises in a tandem-meeting.

Look up specific words before going (dress, kitchentable, leather sofa etc.)Talk about the surroundings, how people look, tell about the time you bought a Koala and had to return it because it didn’t eat your eucalyptus sweets.

Learn a language while walking in the forest

Grab your outdoor gear and take a walk with your tandem-partner. Enjoy nature while learning the language and the words that is convenient for the forest.

Exercises to learn a language for this particular location:
Prepare a few phrases regarding the nature and what happens in the nature. Talk about the surroundings. Share your history of the time your great grandfather saw a wolf running on two legs wearing sports outfit.

Go enjoy a local sports game and learn a language at the same time!

Are you into sports and being part of something bigger? It would be an experience to take your tandem-partner to a football match. Here you would have a very different meeting, because you would have the opportunity to teach each other the different nuances and special sayings when you are at a sports game. For example, if you live in Aarhus Denmark, a Dane could teach you “KOM SÅ DE HVIIIII” or other proverbs and sayings.

Teach each other different ways of cheering for a sports team, how you behave when at a stadium, how people look, the weather, tell your tandem-partner about the time you went streaking at the world cup final between France and Brazil in France back in 1998.

Go see a museum or another cultural place together

When you go out and see cultural stuff you get the chance to learn something about culture and many new words! Here you can focus on the way you describe a painting, a certain exhibition or something else!

Look up words before going (adjectives to be able to describe certain art things, talk about the exhibitions, talk about other places you have been where it impressed you. Which museum is your favorite?

Go to the Zoo, or the animal park

Enjoy an afternoon with the animals! This way you get to learn how to say all the names of the animals. A great exercise is to make up stories about the animals.

Look up words before going (adjectives to be able to describe certain art things, talk about the animals, talk about their adventures. If you were an animal in your next life, which would you be?

At home:

After meeting your tandem-partner a few times in public, you might want to have a tandem-meeting at home. A good way to make a good team is to make dinner together. This can be a fun activity, where you cook traditional food or simply just what you feel like eating. When you are cooking with another person, you learn something about their cultural habits, their cultural background and how your teamwork is.

Make brunch, lunch or dinner together

Invite your tandem-partner over for a national dish you make together! A Spaniard could suggest making paella together, and a Dane would probably make meatballs (frikadeller) with potatoes.

Learn what different kitchen things are called, tell about how you normally cook, your favourite food, tell about the time when you caught three snakes at school and you cooked them for dinner.

Have a cup of coffee at your place

Instead of going out for a coffee, you can have a tandem-meeting at home. Here you have your own little café, where you can choose how formal or informal you want the meeting to be. You could help each other with grammar, read articles together, or simply just have a conversation about the new gossip in town.

Exercises to learn a language for this particular location:
Make up a story and set a timer to 30 seconds and when the time is up your tandem-partner has to continue the story in the foreign language he/she learns.
